Myofascial Release (MFR) is a technique used by physical therapists and other health care providers to relieve pain and improve physical functioning through the manipulation of the fascial network. Fascia is a connective tissue system found throughout the body. It is unique in that it is not a system of separate coverings, but rather one singular structure that extends from head to toe without interruption. Fascia is very densely woven, with an appearance to that of a spider's web. It lines and covers every muscle, bone, nerve and blood vessel in our body as well as surrounding all our internal organs including the heart, brain, spinal cord and lungs.
In the normal healthy state, fascia is relaxed and well hydrated with the ability to stretch and move allowing our body to absorb and adapt to stress With any injury or trauma the fascia loses some of its pliability, becoming tight, dehydrated and limiting normal movement. The restrictions that develop can result in inflammation of joints and soft tissue, compression of bones and nerves, poor posture and pain. Science has shown that adhesions in the fascial network can create pressure on structures in our body of up to 2000 pounds per square inch! Without the constant balanced pull of the fascial network there is a loss of equilibrium in the body resulting in pain and the dysfunction of one or more of our body systems.
MFR allows therapists to engage this three dimensional system and manipulate it to release adhesions and restore the body's normal healthy balance. Using constant, sustained pressure to treat these restricted regions, we take pressure off joints and nerves, improve flexibility in muscles and in the spine, and therefore improve posture, reduce pain and improve the patient's overall quality of life.
Southern Maryland Myofascial Release is a practice based on the John F. Barnes, PT approach. For additional information on this approach and other useful resources, visit myofascialrelease.com.
CranioSacral Therapy is a light-touch approach that releases tensions deep in the body and central nervous system (your brain and spinal cord) to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance.
Everyday you endure stresses and strains and your body absorbs all of them. Unfortunately, your body can only handle so much tension before the tissues start to tighten, potentially affecting the brain and spinal cord and thereby every other system in your body. In the end, this can result in compromise of the function of things like your muscles and nerves, proper organ function, even issues with headaches, eyesight, and memory. CaranioSacral Therapy releases those tensions held deep in the body to allow the body to relax and self-correct. In conjunction with Myofascial Release, CranioSacral Therapy can create dramatic improvements in your life.
Richway's Amethyst Biomat
The BIOMAT is a 17-layer mat combining fabrics and amethyst stones that is used in healing centers all over the world. The mat's technology is centered around three healing components: far infrared light, negative ions, and amethyst quartz. Far infrared rays are part of the electromagnetic spectrum that have been studied for various health benefits. These rays provide warmth and relaxation similar to the energy that radiates from the sun, benefiting both the muscles on the surface on the body and all cells into the deepest parts of the body. Natural Tourmaline and the TOCA (Tourmaline) layer generates negative ions. Negative ions help protect the body from damaging free radicals. Amethyst quartz helps to harmonize the immune system and metabolism providing balance to both body and mind.
Benefits of the Biomat include temporary relief of minor muscle pain, reduction of joint pain and stiffness, a boost in immune system function, reduction in stress and anxiety, relaxation of muscles, toxin removal, and improved skin appearance.
